Harumoe no Mukashi Matcha by Horii Shichimeien
I truly love this matcha. But find it best as koicha, and only as koicha.
As koicha, I find it as delightful as possible. It’s got everything you could want from an umami-laden blend. The delicate notes display boldly like a proud but fragile flower boasting its vivid hues. And any hint of bitterness is perfectly matched with a wave of sweetness. Pay attention. You’ll find it to be very complex.
As usucha, I find it exudes a surprising bitterness that doesn’t seem to show in koicha.
As it cools, the bitterness gets worse until it gets very cool, at which point the bitterness gives way to some of the other flavors: a very mild sweetness, a light floral tone, and a sandy/cardboard taste that’s often in culinary matcha.
This, of course, is not culinary matcha. And none of my thin tea notes actually change my opinion of the Harumoe no Mukashi matcha. I still absolutely love it and would/will purchase it again.
So in short, my other recommendations are: use this for koicha only & use it within two weeks of opening. It’s a nice tea. It’s more than nice, in fact, it’s an incredible koicha. It’s a blend and blends tend to fade in quality a bit more quickly.
So make it quick and make it thick!
